Old school medical ID bracelets are still a surefire way to ensure first responders are alerted to your medical conditions in case you are incapacitated. You may not be aware that your smartphone has a Medical ID feature that is accessible without a passcode. It can serve the same function as a bracelet and, if you lose your smartphone, can be used to help someone find you and return it.
The first step is to enable the Medical ID function. Enter the details you are comfortable sharing and are relevant to an emergency including Emergency Contacts.
Once you have setup the Medical ID function, the information is accessible from the lock screen by anyone. Generally, swiping up to open an iPhone will prompt for the passcode, select Emergency at the bottom left which will allow access to Emergency Call and Medical ID features.
Any contacts designated as Emergency Contacts can be called from the lock screen without a passcode. Apple Watch users have the same functionality reflected in the smartwatch.
If you come across a rider that needs assistance, or you find a smartphone or watch on the trail, check for the Medical ID feature. You may find critical medical information or simply find a contact that can help you return the lost device.
